Hydrogen Fluoride

Honeywell ensures a secure and seamless supply chain from extraction to market. Depend on Honeywell to deliver a quality Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) product. As the world’s largest producer and consumer of HF and the leader in safe and reliable HF transportation, we’re committed to delivering a consistent product to support your operations.

As the world leader in Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) production and delivery, our customers know we understand the rigorous requirements for producing and handling HF with the quality and safety they demand. We take our safety responsibility very seriously.  No other supplier can match the experience and support we provide throughout every phase of production and delivery. We provide this service for all grades of HF.

As a trusted Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) source for over 50 years, we continue to invest in technology that advances the safety and reliability of our HF acid. Our challenge is to provide the safest working environment – protecting employees, the environment, and equipment – while simultaneously enabling you to improve throughput and productivity.

What is Hydrogen Fluoride?

Hydrogen Fluoride also referred to as HF acid or Anhydrous HF is a clear, colorless corrosive liquid that is extremely hazardous. HF is a versatile chemical with diverse industrial applications, but its handling requires meticulous attention to safety due to its corrosive nature and potential health hazards. When HF acid is dissolved in water, it may be called hydrofluoric acid. HF is a weak acid. It’s called a weak acid because it doesn’t fully detach or separate into its ions in water, but it’s still a very dangerous acid due to the potential of acute fluoride toxicity.

How Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) is typically used?

There are many applications that HF acid can be used in, which include:

  • Petroleum Refining
    • HF is used in the petroleum industry for alkylation, a process that produces high-octane gasoline components.
  • Chemical Manufacturing
    • HF is employed in the production of various chemicals, including fluorocarbons, fluoropolymers, and other fluorine-containing compounds. These chemicals are used in applications such as refrigeration, electronics manufacturing, and the production of non-stick coatings.
  • Metal Processing
    • HF is used for pickling and cleaning metals, especially in the semiconductor and electronics industries. It helps remove oxides and other contaminants from metal surfaces.
  • Laboratory Regent
    • HF is used as a laboratory reagent in various analytical and research applications, where its unique reactivity with certain materials is beneficial for specific experiments.

Safety & Handling

Extreme caution is required when working with or around hydrofluoric acid (HF), and all personnel working where it is used or stored must be trained on how to manage potential hazards. As the industry leader in all areas of HF manufacturing and delivery, we have the technical service professionals you need to answer your medical, safety, transportation, and product usage questions. We can provide specialized product knowledge and expertise in order to help you safely use HF.

Safety Training: Honeywell is the leader in HF Medical, safety and handling training. From conducting emergency response simulations to choosing the right protective equipment, we have decades of knowledge in consulting our customers on all aspects of HF usage:

  • Safety training and consulting
  • Medical treatment seminars
  • Emergency response training and planning
  • Mock incident training with specialized trailers
  • Dispersion modeling
  • Personal protective equipment recommendations
  • Occupational health, safety, and toxicology support

Handling and Processing: Benefit from our expertise in planning and improving the use, and storage of every HF grade we supply. Many years of knowledge and experience stand behind all of our handling, processing and storage consulting:

  • Engineering design for storage, handling and processing systems
  • Guidance on materials of construction
  • Inspection and non-destructive thickness testing of storage systems
  • Temporary storage equipment for turnaround and repair needs
  • Operations and unloading procedure development
  • Process safety
  • Process troubleshooting and analytical support
  • Regulatory and compliance
  • Environmental control and compliance
  • Risk minimization and management

Transportation: Transporting your product safely and reliably is our priority. As the world’s leading producer and consumer of HF, we are uniquely qualified to support your efforts to receive, store and use it. We leverage our extensive experience in material and equipment design to help you improve safety, efficiency, and reliability.

The Honeywell Difference: Unlike other HF manufacturers, we don’t make our truck deliveries through common carriers. Every Honeywell HF truck delivery is made by trained Honeywell employees using Honeywell trucks. Every driver is required to complete extensive training in the safe handling and delivery of HF acid.

Railcar Delivery for Anhydrous HF (AHF): Honeywell delivers AHF by railcar. Our railcar fleet is specifically designed to meet the needs of safe AHF transportation.

Truck Delivery for Aqueous HF and AHF: Aqueous HF and AHF is shipped out in bulk quantities via Honeywell trucks and custom-designed trailers. Our trucks and trailers are equipped with emergency shutdown devices and satellite tracking systems, which allow us to pinpoint their location at any time and maintain constant communication with our driver teams. These teams always consist of a two-person crew of Honeywell employees, regardless of the distance to a customer location.
